CONSUMER PRICE INDEX: MAY 2009

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3 percent in May before seasonal adjustment, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Over the last 12 months the index has fallen 1.3 percent. This is the largest decline since April 1950 and is due mainly to a 27.3 percent decline in the energy index.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the CPI-U increased 0.1 percent in May after being unchanged in April. The index for energy, which had declined the previous two months, rose 0.2 percent in May as an increase in the gasoline index more than offset declines in other energy indexes. The food index decreased for the fourth consecutive month, falling 0.2 percent as the indexes for all major grocery store food groups declined.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.1 percent in May following a 0.3 percent increase in April. The smaller increase was partly due to the tobacco and smoking products index, which turned down in May after rising sharply in March and April. In May, the indexes for shelter, new and used motor vehicles, and medical care posted increases, while the public transportation index fell 1.0 percent and the indexes for apparel and tobacco declined slightly. The index for all items less food and energy has increased 1.8 percent over the last 12 months.

HMAS Anzac

HMAS Anzac is the first of her class and a modern warship, capable of operating in a multi-threat environment. Anzac's design is based on the German Meko 200 Class that uses modular construction methods. A feature of this method was the ability to share the construction of the 8 Australian and 2 New Zealand vessels throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Anzac is fitted with an advanced package of air surveillance radars; hull mounted sonar and electronic support systems that interface with state-of-the-art weapons systems. Anzac's armament comprises a five-inch (127-mm) gun, Harpoon missiles, Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles and Ship Launched Torpedoes.

The ship can embark a multi-role Sikorsky S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopter to enhance anti-submarine, anti-surface warfare and Search and Rescue capabilities. Embarkation of a helicopter also provides the ship with the capability to deliver air-launched torpedoes.

Domestic Shipping

Domestic waterborne transportation is safe, reliable, efficient and an established mainstay of America's national transport system. The domestic shipping operations of the American merchant marine provide essential services to 41 states reaching 90 percent of the national population. This environmentally friendly form of surface transportation handles a combined total of over 1.1 billion short tons of cargo, which is about 23 percent of the ton-miles of all domestic surface transportation traffic. Domestic waterborne transportation contributes $7.7 billion to the gross domestic product annually in the form of freight revenue.

To encourage a strong U.S. merchant marine for both national defense and economic security, the nation's domestic waterborne commerce is reserved for vessels built in the United States, owned and crewed by American citizens, and registered under the American flag. U.S. laws governing the domestic transportation of passengers and cargo by water are generally known as the Jones Act, named after Senator Wesley Jones (R-WA), the sponsor of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920. The Jones Act continues to be the foundation for America's domestic shipping policy.
