Over the past fifteen years water transportation has grown from a single commuter boat on a Hingham to Boston route to four Inner Harbor services and four commuter runs which serve 1.2 million passengers annually. With the downtown Boston area becoming more congested, the Inner Harbor Commuter services are expected to grow to 3.77 million riders by the year 2010.
There is a wide variation in the level of accessibility with the current designs of both boats and docking systems, however most operators are able to provide accessibility to many if not all of their services for people with disabilities. Many of the existing facilities are being rehabilitated and many new facilities are being built.
